It starts in November. Sometimes it even begins late in October. The first snowline - the most talked about news in Revelstoke. This marks the beginning of Deep December fever. Instagram lights up with images of powder skiing in all its forms. A highly contagious condition, you know you’ve caught a case of it when fomo sets in. There is just one cure: Time to SKI.

Revelstoke is a world-class destination for heliskiers. All winter long the boom of rotors echoes down the valley at daybreak and returns an hour before alpenglow. It’s our civic soundtrack.

December is untracked. It has no history. While the fashion scene in town may be street shoes and a light puffy, up in the Monashees, winter is full-on. Snow is quietly and rapidly accumulating.

Unique pace

December has a unique pace. Daylight approaches slowly, building anticipation. You are prepped and ready in the dark. Line-ups at the Modern and La Baguette coffee shops are out the door. Skiers are chomping at the bit because December days don’t wait. When go-time hits, we rock and roll. Get those rotors spinning.

In December, our deep snowpack is in its early stages. Runs are not always filled in the way we like them. This is when our guides really shine, picking out lines that are not often skied, and taking full advantage of low angle sun exposure and sheltered snow. It’s a sweet short window of opportunity.

Deep December 2019 | P: Lead Guide Craig Ellis

Last December, we had over 350 cm (12 ft) of snowfall. We spent most of the month getting face shots, and over the head pow in our old-growth backyard. The secret is out, the month of December is ON in the Monashees.

First tracks of year can hit some of our favourite lines. It's stormy, deep and delicious out there and it happens once per year. December: don't miss your chance.
